This rock quartet consists of Dave Benedict on bass, Danny Craig on drums, Jeremy Hora on guitar and Dallas Smith on vocals. Until their rapid rise to fame, Smith, who had never been in a band before, worked as a sheet metal cutter in their hometown of Vancouver. Then he auditioned for Hora and Craig, who were putting a band together. The three clicked, and soon added Benedict on bass.
To fund their initial demo sessions, Smiths father allowed them to siphon $20,000 from his retirement account. Luckily, the investment paid off. We just recently paid Dad back in full, laughs Smith. So I guess we really have become a success. Defaults debut album The Fallout has gone gold in both Canada and the US and their first single, Wasting My Time, hit Top 5 on multiple rock charts. Their success has been bolstered by tour dates across North America opening for fellow Vancouverites Nickelback. Things have come together so quickly that I havent even had time to fully ponder the weight of the situation were in, says Smith. But we are surely blessed. It would be ridiculous to say that being in this band was not the best thing thats ever happened to us.
In contrast to the melodic Wasting My Time, the bands second single is the edgy, riff-heavy Deny. The song is accompanied by an even edgier video directed by Noble Jones. The clip features Laila Ali (female boxing star and daughter of Mohammed) and the band literally gets beat up and pretty brutally. This didnt require just a little cute bruise make-up, explains Hora. This was a true Ali-style ass-kickingwe needed a special effects person applying prosthetics to our faces! Luckily Dallas got the worst of it... With more tour dates in the near future, and more singles to come off The Fallout, Default is a band to watch in 2002.
